Eileen's Story

Life This bio - as is my life and everything about it - is a work in progress. After H.S. I studied Cantorial Music & sang as part of an Internationally Performing Choir & was Soloist w/them for 17 years. I studied Musical Theater & sang in the 1st Opera Company to do a fully staged production in Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, NYC. For some of this I even convinced Michael Katz - F.L.'73 - to join w/me! :-) I sang in the Worlds first (& maybe only) Kosher/Japanese Restaurant Nightclub "Shalom Japan" for 4 1/2 years. Then I started singing, acing & doing stage-combatant in "The New York Renaissance Festival" as well as "The Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park" in NYC. I performed in both for 9 years. I also sang in other Festivals, Clubs & on lots of stages, worked in the Newsroom at NBC & bred & raised show cats. My "odd-jobs" include running an Ice-Skating Rink, bursar for a Concert Hall/Performance School & bartending. Yes, most actors do this or wait tables. But do they bartend, then change into a gown, headline in the show in the same place & then finish bartending in that gown? As a NYC straphanger I even had the opportunity to "tee off" '76's own Peter Fleischer & then got up in very public NYC meetings to "complain" to his boss. A few times... But I digress... I did lots of shows (paid my dues - including playing "Almira Gulch/T.W.W.", sang Light Opera Off-Broadway (lots of G&S) for almost a year which led to getting my Actor's Equity Union Card. A very proud moment, but then my Father died & I didn't realize that my life would start to fall apart. Went to work in a Jewelry store, but then my boss passed away & my Mom did too, just 4 weeks later. (Should I be taking the deaths of all these important people in my life personally?) A few years later I started (I thought) on my way back to my Singing Career by Off-Off Broadway Stage Managing, Set Design & Prop making. I later made what should have been my Singing Comeback Début, only to be diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma 6 months later, just one month after getting engaged for the 1st time on my 40 birthday. I am now The One & Only "UptownWench"! Since 1994 I've been The Performance Director of "The Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park" (in which I sang for 9 years) in Manhattan, in-between chemotherapy & radiation experiences. I did manage to throw together a small wedding (Aug'98) before my 1st round of chemo. Whew! Just in time cuz I didn't want to be a bald bride! And then there are those 7 fabulous frozen embryos... (Isn't that the way everyone does it???) Please see the (albeit somewhat rosy-ish) version of part of my cancer "story" thru '02 on a wonderfully informative "page"; Healthology Dott Calm; (Health Information Library) "Life With Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma: One Woman's Story" But don't blink or you'll miss the "Wench with the whip"! ;-) So now it's Valentine's Day 2006 & my embryos are 7 1/2 years old! I've gone thru 3 different rounds of chemo in just over a year. Today I start on the experience of a Stem-Cell...Expand for more
Transplant. Nothing like celebrating a romantic day, bald & hooked up to IV lines for 11 hours! Yet I am becoming more known as a Cancer Patient than a Singer Actress or Director. Did an interview last week for C.P. Hospital. Even did a photo shoot. Yes! I used a fine face powder on my shiny bald head... I've been told I'm more marketable for TV w/short hair, but this is ridiculous! ;-) So as I say: Life is what happens while you're getting your life together to happen! But please someone tell me why Dr. Ruth & I keep crossing paths??? Survived the Stem-Cell-Transplant. (It worked about 80%. I tried to make the Med. Fest.'06 as a makeshift reunion. But no go.) Reunions Message Board "class of 1976 30th reunion" Started By: Richard Romer & Bedford / Fox Lane "sight" Alumni Reunion Info - 1976 11/06 More chemo. 05/07 That Chemo failed. The next Phase I Clinical Trials - didn't work either -- 07/07 On to new Chemo! My 11th different type of Cancer treatment in 9 ½ years!! (Even tho I have learned the hard way that, as I say, "A.D.D. and Chemo-Brain DO NOT MIX!!!" But I seem to remember the traumatic parts of my life the best!) Just after starting the next type of "experimental" chemo I lost my Feline Daughter of nearly 20 years. She was born into my hands and she died in my arms. I will miss her forever... 3/08 = I am still heart broken. But I've been off of chemo since December & I'm still here... See You ALL on Sunday, Sept. 28th, '08! The Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park in NYC! ("Da Hood" where the new Broadway Musical "In The Heights" takes place - In Washington Heights!) 2/09 = Well, I was off the main chemo for a whole year (but was on only one chemical - #12 - as maintenance) & the '08 Medieval Festival was good but very soggy... I was feeling oh so very hopeful on Election Day - but found a new lump just about 36 hours after the Election returns were final. Sigh... So now I am back in hard chemo - course #13 of treatment I believe - (another Phase 1 Clinical Trial). But someday I WILL start a company called: "GuineaPigs R US" with a Division called "PinCushions R US"!!! Altho, now thanks to my new "Portacath" I have a few inches of "bionic veins" and no longer qualify to be a full time "PinCushion"!!! ;-) Oh yes, did I forget to mention that little detail of my marriage being in its very last stages of breaking apart... Yes! Life happens... 4/09 = Well, THAT Phase 1 Clinical Trial didn't work - tho excruciatingly painful = lots of pain, no gain... :-( So now it's off to course #14 of my Cancer Treatments - another (very) Phase 1 Clinical Trial which I started on April 13th - the day before the 45th Anniversary of my 6th Birthday!! :-) Sigh... (And after only 3 months my "Portacath" already had "clot issues"... Did I forget to mention before that "Life" is a 4 letter word... I still hope to see you all at the 25th Annual Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park in NYC on Sunday, October 4th 2009!!! Tweeteth wyth loveth, The One & Only "UptownWench" Dott Calm
